Bare-Minimum Tool NecessitiesIf you are on a limited budget, the following tools will allow you to accomplish a multitude of domestic DIY chores. Hammer - There are many different types of hammers available, all specialized to particular work trades, but the basic all-purpose hammer has a curved-claw and ranges between 16oz and 20oz in weight. For general work, it is recommended to choose a 16oz claw hammer with fiberglass or graphite handle (for shock absorption and durability). Tape Measure - A 25ft, semi-rigid measuring tape is the most versatile option for homeowners. The semi-rigid format will allow you to measure without someone having to hold the other end. Multi-Tool - If you're not much of a handyman or woman, multi-tools are a great way to save money and space. You'll have everything you need to deal with most odd jobs at home. If you get to a point where you want more specific tools, the multi-tool will come in handy for camping or at the cottage. It's a win-win investment! |

AligningInstalling a shelf or hanging a painting will be a lot easier and faster if you have a level to mark it first. Same goes for a stud finder. If you have a fairly heavy object to hang on the wall, you'll most likely need to screw it into a stud to avoid putting a huge hole into the wall. Stud finder/level combos are also available, and may just be what you need! The combination square is useful to mark 90-degree (or 45) straight cuts. |

ScrewdriversIf you don't plan to do any heavy work with your screwdriver, a handy multi-screwdriver might work best for you. You'll have every driver bit you could ever find use for, and all in one tool. As your skills evolve, you'll come to realize that some driver bits - specifically the Flat (slotted) and Phillips (cross-head) are used more than others, and that a full-size version might be a good addition to your toolbox. |

CuttingCutting tools are not something you might immediately see yourself using but they do come in handy for odd jobs. Consider a hack saw for chores like shortening a curtain rod, a hand saw for sizing wooden shelving, and a utility knife for opening boxes etc. |

Wrenches and PliersA wrench will give you a little more torque for tightening or loosening nuts and bolts. Buying a whole set of wrench sizes can get expensive, but an adjustable version is a cheaper alternative for beginners. An adjustable model that locks in place is your safest bet. Strap wrenches are fully adjustable, but their soft strap allows you to use it on odd shaped objects without damaging surfaces. At the very least, you can use them to open jars in the kitchen! Long-nose pliers have a non-slip pointed grip and a side wire cutter. They are useful for tight spaces or delicate work such as fixing jewellery or electrical issues. |

StorageNow that you have all the gear, you will need something to store it in. After all, your new hand tools won't be much use if you can't find them when you need them! |
