Going Green for Back to School

Teaching Kids to Love our Earth

Your kids go to school to get educated, but good habits start at home. The younger they learn the importance of making environmentaly responsible buying choices, the easier it will be for them to fully integrate the green movement into their daily lives.

Keep reading to find some green tips and alternatives to regular school buys.  You'll be amazed at the amount of quality products available to us these days!

Responsible Fashion

It wasn't that long ago that you could only find green clothing and accessories at hemp stores - and they weren't that fashion forward either!  These days however, more and more companies are creating cool designs using organic or recycled fabrics and materials.  Eco-fashion is in - join the trend!

Our green tip: Buying quality clothing is less wasteful because it lasts longer.  Also, eco-friendly laundry detergent is not only gentle on your clothes, but gentle on the planet too.

Recycled School Bags

Set yourself apart from your peers and carry your homework or laptop in something creative and cool!  Look for bags made from recycled products like plastic, newspapers, cans - in fact, anything goes for a truly unique and green school bag!

Lunch is served!

The amount of trash generated each day in schools across our country is staggering, and a big part of it comes from our kids' packed lunches.  Instead of using convenience food, prepacked in plastic or cardboard choose reusable containers and bottles for drinking. A reusable lunchbox or bag makes for an eco-friendly replacement to a disposable lunch bag.

Our green tip:  Staying away from individually packaged pre-made or processed food will not only decrease the amount of materials going to landfills but also make your child a lot healthier.  Cooking a big lasagna or chicken at the begining of the week will save you time when it comes to preparing the lunches in the morning.

Environmentally Conscious School Supplies

School supplies usually don't last more than a year - if they make it that long!  Look for eco-friendlier alternatives like soybean crayons (they are as good, if not better than their counterpart!), solar calculators and recycled binders.

Our green tip:  Getting your kids used to reusing their binders and pencil cases from year to year will save you a lot of money.  Also, make it a routine to go through used notebooks and binders and save unused paper at the end of each school year.

High Tech Goes Green - Electronics

These days, many companies offer a free recycling plan when you buy their electronic products. Others offer refurbished items for a fraction of the cost.  As for the electronics you already own, the internet provides a great resource for finding local recycling facilities.

Good Habits Start at Home - Home Office

Use recycled paper and a refurbished desktop or laptop, which will perform just as well as a new one, but will save you a respectable amount of money.  These days, just like electronics, a good number of companies offer a recycling program for ink and toner cartridges from your home office - take advantage of it!
